Actually it was the ironbreakers I was thinking about, I remember something about them guarding the deepest dungeons in heavy armor to protect the miners and treasure from whatever horrible creatures live there...

And the thunderers are still engineers right?  Are pistols and handguns powder weapons?

They are powder weapons.

In combat, engineers are effectively just really really good thunderers.

Last night's game went really well, I need to tweak a few numbers here and there, nothing major.. V5.0 when I have a little time...

Mmm those new Dark Elf minis are looking nice! ...Slev I know your Bestiary says not to the trust the Daemons section, but is the Dark Elves section good to go?

Also would you say your PV values are consistent with the original rulebook convention or did you invent your own calculation for these? (thanks!)

How's that v5.0 comin?  Wink

Numbers are based on what is now the last army book, the numbers should be close enough for our purpose.

I calculated the equivalence between WFB8 values and AHQ values, and came up with the conversion system.

V5, I've not had time for. We're about to have some major work done on the house, and I'm trying to square things away in advance of that. I can work on the v5.0 later.

Hey Slev, I've got another question for yah. Wink

My roommate and I have been playtesting the heck out of various different combat modifications and we keep coming back to your version... though we mostly left the death-zones as is from the rulebook.

You started to clarify this earlier in the thread but I'm sorry to say I am still confused hah:
Quote:
Death Zones are no longer focused.
Models may pass through enemy
Death Zones if the space also contains
a friendly Death Zone or Model.

To me this implies that if no other friendly-model/friendly-DZ is nearby then your model will still be 'focused' when entering an enemy DZ.  Which is exactly how the rule works in the rulebook.

Could you please explain this so an idiot (me) can understand? Smiley

One variation we tried was - When you enter a DZ of an unengaged enemy you may continue your move (up to your Sp max) as long as you finish your move somewhere in that same enemy's DZ - making you 'focused'/engaged with that enemy - and freeing all other models from having to stop in that DZ.  But it feels slightly less realistic.

We also tried with no DZ at all... basically anyone can move anywhere but if you are in base-to-base you can only use hand-to-hand attacks, but that was pretty chaotic and also felt unrealistic.

Oh the other thing we found was that being able to attack diagonally heavily favored the side with greater numbers, most often the monsters.  How do you guys counter this?

The "Deathzone Focusing" rules caused all sorts of headaches in practice. In my version, a DZ is NEVER Focussed.

Yes, diagonal attacks allow the Monsters to bring more numbers to bear. This is deliberate.  The new Monster charts are scaled to cover that. The Heroes need to be careful as to their placement and use the terrain to their advantage or they will quickly be KO'ed. It all comes down to tactics.

Well it must just be the English that has me tripped up... the second part of your rule means that anyone can walk freely through a death zone as long as a friendly model/DZ is also there... which also means - if there is NOT a friendly model/DZ you cannot walk out of a DZ - meaning you are essentially focused.  Am I just missing something obvious here?

Let's explain from the beginning.

During an Action which gives you movement, Deathzones matter.
A figure who is currently moving as part of their current action has no Death Zone
You may ignore enemy Death Zones where the space also contains a friendly Death Zone or Model.
Otherwise, if you enter a Deathzone as part of your movement, that Action ends.
The exception to this is a DZ solely caused by range R weapons, in which case you may, should you have enough movement left, move one additional space towards the enemy with that Range R weapon.

Thus, you can get away from a model who's DZ you are in by moving away at the start of an Action that allows movement. If they have a spear or some such, this will take a little more effort...

Great news
just started to play AH and having looked through all the variants, yours seems like what we have been searching for.
The new format makes it way easier to read and download Smiley

Quick q, can you use the original monster stats?

You *can*, but I'm putting the bestiary out shortly. Just a few last checks and the Skaven will be ready to go!

I've put up a preview of the Undead Bestiary. It lacks several illustrations. If anyone can help with high-res photos (ideally of Citadel/GW figures), please pass them along!

BIG update this week.
We're now on v6.1, and it's VERY spiffy.

There a problem on the Appendix IX Colour version, but that should be fixed shortly.
