Idea to make the wizard suck less while not changing the game

What if instead of the wizard burning the spell automatically when casting it, he has to roll anything but a 1 or 2 on a d6 to keep the spell, still some risk when casting the spell, but he doesn't become totally worthless after a few encounters(hopefully)

Rull under your MP, "6" auto-fils. If you succeed, keep the spell. If you fail, lose 1MP.
Must rull befre using abilities which prevent your from needing to discard the spell. Can't be used with spell scrolls, spells from artefacts, etc.

4 in 6 chance to keep the spell?  I guess that means he'll be holding on to them most of the time...  Personally I'd make it so he'd keep it on a white shield or skulls even.  But I guess that's just an arbitrary decision on my part and wouldn't want to make such a big change all at once.  Have you playtested it like this?  And do the Chaos magic users get to roll to keep them, also?  (maybe on a black shield...)

I think 50/50 would be good, keep on a white shield.  there should be exceptions though. Using the Genie to open a door, should be automatic loss.

Half-way through the Game System allowing the Wizard two of each of the spells he chooses. Seems to work really well thus far.

No, the Wizard sucks.  A half and half chance of him losing the Spell is too much.  Seriously, black shield on every Spell use means he loses the Spell.  He sucks way too much otherwise.

Or maybe, at least only for damaging Spells.  All the other buff spells might be fine as a one-shot type of thing, but imagine, if you will, if HeroQuest had experience points.  You want everyone to score as much as everyone else, right?  The Wizard would be left in the dust.

Or maybe, a per-card rule.  Each card would have either a black shield, white shield, and white skull on it.  Each time you use the Spell, you roll a die.  If you roll the icon shown, the Spell is gone.  For powerful Spells like Genie (I WANNA OPEN ALL THE DOORS!) You'd have a white skull.  For the one that does 1 or 2 damage to a Monster, black skull.

This makes it easy to figure out how much you can reuse a card just by looking at it.

There it's done I win.
