The Rescue of Sir Ragnar

Welcome to our first battle report for Dungeon Crawl.  This is actually an older battle report that we never got around to cleaning up and posting, so some of the rules might be a bit outdated.  This was done last year on March 15, 2009.  Yeah, it's old, sue me.  We had decided to play test the Dungeon Crawl rules on a familiar dungeon setting:  The Rescue of Sir Ragnar (the second quest from the original HeroQuest quest book).  I rigged up a map to look similar to the HeroQuest map but using the Dungeon Crawl tiles.  I came up with something similar enough to suit our purposes.  See the comparison below.

......

We used a purchased mat that had a 1" grid, to be used with dry erase markers.  I believe it's a Crystal Caste Combat Mat®.  We used this instead of the actual Dungeon Crawl tiles.  It was actually pretty cool using the mat.

Our heroes consisted of the following party:

Biff, the stout human barbarian, carrying a trusty short sword eager for green blood.
Nameless, the human rogue, who started with a short sword as well.
Pint, the halfling sorcerer, also bearing a short sword.
And Derf, the Dwarf Cleric, armed with a light mace.
Each hero also began the game with two healing potions (restores 5 health) and 2 Potions of Life.

Oh, and be warned... we had a little too much fun with that red dry erase marker.  You can see our path of destruction carved out through the dungeon in prodigious amounts of blood and gore.  Smiley

Let the quest begin!

The adventure begins at the spiral stairway, as per the original scenario.  As the heroes entered the first room of the dungeon, they moved toward the door and searched for treasure.  Biff found nothing, Derf was unlucky and found sticky roots attaching to his legs, reducing his movement by 2 for the remainder of the quest, the rogue found 25 gold, and the halfling sorcerer drew an "Ow, my arm!" card which reduced his next attack by 3 (to a minimum of one).

...

Biff enters the corridor and heads straight for the goblin around the corner.  He swings with one success, but the nimble goblin dodges his attack.  It retaliates but misses.  Pint moves into the corridor and unleashes a fireball spell, causing 1 point of damage to all goblins in the corridors, but they all defend.  On the new turn, initiative is re-rolled and Pint unleashes another fireball.  This time, one of the goblins isn't so lucky.

...

Biff takes a shot of adrenaline and disposes of the remaining goblin.

...

The heroes rounded the corner and spotted two more goblins to the north.  Derf ended the round there, but drew first initiative on the next round, so he got a second attack before the goblins could react, killing the first goblin by the door.  Pint casts a fireball in the corridors, frying all the goblins for 1 damage.  The goblin to the north defends, but the lone goblin down the corridor suffers a horrific fiery death.  The Dungeon Lord uses an anger point to increase the goblin's attack, but he squanders it on a miss.

The lucky goblin in the north corridor deflects attacks from Nameless and Biff, and retaliates with an anger-increased attack but rolls snake eyes.  Pint continues to explore down the corridor.  Derf continues the attack on the goblin in the north corridor with three attack dice, but completely misses!

Nameless attacks the goblin again and misses.

...

Pint continues to explore and opens the door, revealing two orcs.  He takes some adrenaline to beef up his next fireball and roasts both orcs into piles of ash!

...

The seemingly invincible goblin in the north uses 2 anger points to roll a 3 dice attack against Nameless, but the rogue manages to dodge the attack.  Biff and Derf continue to attack the goblin, but he continues to defend!

...

Nameless continues the attack on the goblin, but the goblin defends.  The rogue grows bored and moves away.  Biff takes one final swing at the goblin, hitting with 2 successes.  The goblin defends, but not enough, taking 1 damage and perishing at last.  After defeating the two orcs without a scratch, Pint searches for treasure.  All he finds is a spear shooting through his stomach!

...

Normally a 5 dice trap, the DL uses four anger points to convert it into a living trap, adding an extra 3 dice.  DL scores 4 successes and Pint manages to block 2, taking 2 damage and surviving!  Whew!

...

Derf searches for treasure and finds a potion.

Biff catches up to Derf and Pint and searches for treasure, but instead gets an arrow in the back, taking 2 damage.  The heroes all enter the room, searching for secret doors and treasure, but find nothing.

...

The rogue opens the door to encounter an orc and two goblins.  He strategically steps aside to allow Biff to attack.  One adrenaline and a swing, and the goblin in the doorway falls to Biff's sword.  Pint enters the room and moves to the corner, casting a fireball at all of the room's occupants.  The greens just shrug off the attack.

...

The orc attacks Biff but is blocked while the goblin attacks the sorcerer, who nimbly dodges with two successes.

...

Derf moves into a better position.  {At this point we decided to make a rule change.  The rogue had been doing no damage with the shortsword, rolling one attack die while the orcs and goblins rolled 2 defense, so we decided it was best to start him off with a sling.}  Nameless, with his brand new sling, attacks the orc, who defends.  Derf can't do much from his position and passes.  Biff takes a mighty swing at the orc and kills him.  The goblin then attacks Biff, causing 1 damage.  Pint attacks the goblin but is blocked.  The rogue takes aim again with his sling and scores 2 damage, taking the goblin by surprise, who completely botches his defense roll and goes down, bringing the battle to an end.

After a round of searching, Biff finds 60 gold and a potion of healing (5 health) in the chest, Pint finds nothing, Derf finds... chalk!  And Nameless finds a loose tile, trips, and takes 1 damage.  What a dumbass.

...

Biff opens the door to the north and, seeing a pair of greens, rushes in and attacks the orc for 2 damage.  The Dungeon Lord used an anger point to give the orc Evil Armor, adding 1 extra die of defense, just enough to survive the attack!  Pint enters and attacks the goblin for 1, which gets blocked.  Derf finishes the round by healing Biff to full.  The goblin then deflects attacks by Derf and Nameless, and the orc blocks an adrenaline-pumped attack by Biff.  The orc follows up with an anger-powered attack, but Biff dodges.  Pint and the goblin attack each other but both remain unscathed.  Derf attacks the goblin again, who easily defends with two successes.

...

The player decides that enough is enough and the red dice he's using are against him, so he switches his and the Dungeon Lord's black dice.  No more shall goblins defend turn after turn!  The orc attacks Biff in anger, and Biff doesn't quite manage to dodge out of harm's way, taking one health of damage.  The rogue attacks the orc, scoring two hits, and the orc falls victim to the shitty red dice and perishes.  The goblin still manages to block Pint's attack with the red dice, but not Biff's next attack, which fells him, ending the combat.

...

...

The heroes search for treasure before moving on, but Derf finds an evil genie who makes him weak for the rest of the quest, Nameless finds a potion of healing (d6), Pint finds a rock, and Biff finds what might be a crumbling wall that leads to some gold, but has no pick with which to get at it.

Derf opens the door to the next room, sees two orcs, and attacks one of them, completely missing.  The orc retaliates and scores a hit for one damage.  The second orc uses anger to attack Biff with 4 dice, scoring 4 successes.  Biff only blocks 2 and takes 2 damage.  The rogue sends a sling bullet into the orc's skull, and even an anger point's worth of defense wasn't enough to save him.  Pint misses the last orc, and Biff swings at him but the orc dodges.  Pint misses once again, but Derf pumps himself full of 3 adrenaline and scores 4 successes, killing the orc with no chance to defend.

...

The heroes take a look around the room, finding a short spear and Beef Brew.  Having explored the entire north part of the dungeon, the heroes split up searching for secret doors and heading back down to the southern corridor.

The Dungeon Lord uses 4 anger points to summon an Orc to waylay Derf and Nameless, but he misses completely.  The DL gets last on initiative the next round, and the rogue uses the opportunity to put one between his eyes.

...

The heroes continue to search and split up, with Derf and Nameless going south and Biff exploring west with Pint.  Nameless opens the door in the south, finding an orc  and killing him.

...

Nameless finds nothing in his room, while Derf draws an "Ow, my arm!" card.  Meanwhile Biff almost reaches a goblin in the west corridor, and places a spear in the goblin's chest, stopping his little heart.

...

...

The rogue opens the door to the next room, revealing two orcs.  He strikes one orc, who falls dead.  Derf tries to attack the second, but his arm hurt and he missed.

...

Pint searches for secret doors and Biff enters the door in the west corridor, finding a goblin just as his spear finds the goblin's face.  Although on the map it looks like he hit the goblin with a steam roller.

...

The remaining orc on the board attacks Derf, successfully causing 2 damage.

...

Derf takes 2 adrenaline and rolls 4 successes on an attack roll, killing the orc instantly.  Biff opens the treasure chest and fails to spot the poison needle on it, which stabs him and reduces his health to 1.  He chugs a healing potion in response, bringing him back up to six health.  The chest was empty.  Pint and Nameless fail to spot secret doors.  Derf, doubtful of the rogue's ability to search, tries again and spots a secret door to the north.  He immediately enters the room and finds himself standing toe-to-toe with an orc and a cave hulk!  He goes for the weaker opponent, hitting for 3, bringing the orc's life to a quick end.  Biff and Pint begin to scramble back to the rest of the party when they hear the clamor and ruckus of a real fight.  The hulk rears itself to its full height, invokes the power of the Dungeon Lord to give himself an armor upgrade (+1 defense permanently) and a power strike for an upgraded attack.  He only causes one damage.  Nameless pumps himself up with 4 adrenaline and scores three successes, but the hulk uses anger to beef up his defense, taking only one damage.

...

Derf continues the attack with a 2 adrenaline attack, but the hulk spends more anger allowing him to block all damage.  Derf then begins a strategic retreat.  The hulk moves to the doorway, blocking the rogue in and attacking him, causing 1 damage.  Then the rogue moves away and uses adrenaline to pump up his next attack to four successes.  The hulk uses 2 anger to defend, blocking all but one damage, bringing him down to a single health.  Biff and Pint are still trying to catch up.

...

Rogue opens up on the hulk again but misses.  Derf moves back up and attacks, scoring 2 successes.  The hulk, out of anger points, succumbs to the attack.

...

As Biff and Pint get nearer to the party, Nameless opens the door to discover the bruised and beaten body of Sir Ragnar.  Alarms go off, but there are no more doors to open or monsters to place, so the heroes make their way back to the starting room.

...

The heroes search for treasure on the way back.  Derf finds two magic shots and almost gets lucky when he finds an X that leads to treasure, but he had no shovel to dig it with, Pint finds a 40 oz Deathblow and 30 gold, Biff finds 40 gold in a sock and takes 2 damage from a spear trap, and Nameless dodges an arrow trap and underneath a loose floor tile he finds... floor!

...

As the heroes make their way back to the corridor, the Dungeon Lord has amassed enough anger points to spawn a hulk and attack!  But he misses...  and gets first on initiative next round.  Unfortunately his attack is blocked, and Biff uses 4 adrenaline and his Beef Brew to cause 6 damage.  The unlucky hulk uses all his anger but cannot withstand the awesome might of Biff's spear, and he falls dead.

...

The Dungeon Lord manages to spawn one more goblin at the door to the entrance room, but he falls quickly to Biff's attack.  The heroes make it to the stairs with Sir Ragnar unscathed, earning them 240 gold coins from Prince Magnus.

Yeah it was fun playing on the battle mat.  It's especially great after a frustrating fight, to put a great big blob of red where a monster used to be.  Cheesy

This one was fun but it dragged out for a while because there was a LOT of walking.  However, this made the game go into a lot of turns, so the Dungeon Lord racked up the Anger, and that made for a real fun game because you never know when a Goblin was gonna whop you with like 5 Attack Dice!

Now those anger points are really interesting.

But why didn't you put furniture on the board instead of drawing it?

Well, we didn't have any Dungeon Crawl tiles printed out at the time... and we were playing Dungeon Crawl, not HeroQuest.   Wink

The Anger points are an awesome mechanic that prevents things like Heroes doubling back to every room to search everything indiscriminately or spending two turns getting into the most effective formation on a door before having the barbarian open it.  Things like this tended to give too much control to the player in HeroQuest and the players never had a sense of impending threat.  It allowed them to get complacent and take it too casually when every battle starts out with all the pieces in the player's favor.

With Anger points around, the player feels that they can't dawdle around for long and they have to maximize every turn to avoid giving free points to the Dungeon Lord.  Even the race back to the stairs becomes an issue where every turn counts, since the DL is still racking up points for a well placed sneak attack (or a sneaky goblin placed at a doorway, preventing an easy escape!)  It makes it very fun for the DL to watch the heroes sweat.

Yeah I remember hobbling back to the stairs (because Ragnar was slowed, right?) and he was pretty weak, so I surrounded him on all sides with the Heroes because I never knew what green asshole was gonna pop up next to him and biff him right in the face!

Definitely an enjoyable quest, but next time cut down on them corridors!
