Hi guys! - My first miniature painting efforts
09/29/09 at 9:42am

I recently decided to start painting my minis as a therapeutic device to remove stress from work and family problems.  1965

I am not using the proper miniature painting materials and I know it. I have a bunch of old (20 years old) art materials, and I don't wanna buy more that will again sit there for an additional 20 years after I am done.

My first test was a disaster as my paint was too thick, but I learned quickly to thin my paint.

I am not done with these minis, this is a work in progress and I appreciate any input.

I have learned that photographing the minis is a great tool to see more detail than you can see with the naked eye and correct mistakes.

Since I am using OIL PAINTS this is going very slow, but I do not mind, as I've said this is simply therapy for me. Sometimes I wait for the previous paint session to dry and sometimes I simply go wet on wet. depending on how much time I have or what I am doing at the moment.

I probably made the mistake to start on too many minis (maybe couple of hundred,) but that allowed me to prime all at pretty much the same time.

I mostly spend a few hours on the weekend, and this is the result of a couple of months work.

I quickly learned the amount of detail I want to see in my minis. They are meant to be played with and I don't intend to spend more than a certain amount of time on each.

Those don't look bad at all.

Oil paints or not those look good.

really like the leopard print on the stone giant... he's a sassy girl.

Very good work!  I really like the Chaos Warriors.  To be honest I was expecting very amateurish work but your highlighting and stuff is really good.  You can tell the paint was pretty thick when you painted the horns on them, but aside from that I think you're doing a great job.

And welcome to the boards!

The leopard skin makes sense, as (s)he's got that strongman drag on.
I coulda gone with lion skin, but the tawn agaist the brawn wouldn't work very well.  Doing the spots was fun.
At first I was going with a Jolly Green Giant scheme, but I've already got too many green skins as it is.
I believe originally he is supposed to be gray, but I find myself liking the colorful high-contrast effect versus the more subtle schemes (though some of those look great!) myself.

---

Yeah, I know the paint is going on thick, but that was my original mistake.
If I can get a second chance at painting a bunch of minis I'll take care of that, I'll just sell/trade this first effort and keep the second, as I'm bound to be better by then.

I do have a shrink wrapped HeroQuest that I haven't made up my mind to either keep or sell.
That might be the one to keep.

That's ONE miniature PER YEAR!
In all seriousness, solid painting, really good highlighting, I like the style.

Good work there.
Don't worry about not being the fastest painter alive.
I'm a slow painter too, find it more satisfying than just ramming stuff out the door.

Hey. Nice work man. A couple of things give you away as an at least semi-experienced painter even before you started on those minis (not that you've denied being a painter). Smiley

- You have art tools lying around at home.
- You're working with complementary colours.
- You understand the importance of contrast and creating an illusion of depth in the minis because they're small.

All that said, I think you're doing a great work on those. Several of them I would say are "done" if you're going for a table top level of painting. The eyes on the dwarf with the beer mug are ace. I can't help but wonder however, what size brushes are you using? Getting some 0 and 00 brushes for the tiniest details doesn't have to cost you much if you buy cheap brushes.

Also, don't worry about oil. I know people over at coolminiornot.com that paint with all kinds of stuff. Several real pro's use oil too. It's just a slightly different way to work, but you can get incredible finishes with oil, that you'd never be able to with acrylics (depending on the acrylic in question of course).

So, thanks for sharing your work. Very good, and keep going.  Smiley

Hey, I have a question. I recognize a lot of the minis, but not all of them. Specifically, what are the blue and white guys from. The blue one looks like Wolverine.

Those X-Men are a mess. That's why they were the first I worked on.

Anyway on to new business. I am doing custom monster cards - mostly based on Mortimer's Bestiary, but also others. It took a bit of research on the Jabberwock, and for the Hobgoblins I had to go the the Spanish site, for example.
